Kerbedanz gave to this watch the symbolic figure of Celtic Dog. The dog was highly valued by the ancient Celts as both hunter and warrior.
Made in 18K white solid gold, the blue enameled dial of "Celtic Dog" is topped by an ornament made in white gold representing the Celtic dog surrounded by tracery of La Tène style (from the archaeological site of La Tène in Switzerland). The artist has taken this style of tracery of La Tène period in order to give life to that almost mythical creature which was the Dog for all Celts. This tracery can be interpreted as the thread of Life that connects the creature (human, animal or even plant) to the natural world and at the same time to the Afterlife.
Celts have literally adored dogs, and the classical authors also emphasize their undoubted superiority in a practice of dog breeding. They regarded the dog as an animal with exceptional courage. Celtic dogs were very famous and were used for warfare and hunting. The Arvern king Bituitus had a guard of dogs, which, according to him, had to make short work of the Roman army. Similarly, in the Irish epic, the Dog Ailbe alone was enough to guard the kingdom of Laighen - not to mention that of Culann ... Pliny assures that the Gauls were covering their dogs by wolves and they have given the obtained hybrids for guides to their packs.
The hunting was, with the war, one of the main occupations of Celts. It required initiation and could be practiced together with a ritual intended for obtaining a divine protection. The dogs were so valuable auxiliaries. For each captured or killed animal, the hunters were putting aside a small amount of money. After one year, in the day of the birth of Artemis (Diana the Huntress in Roman mythology), they were opening the "kitty" so constituted and employing this money to pay for a sacrifice to the goddess and to prepare a banquet, during which the dogs were appearing crowned with flowers.
For the Celts, the dog is also the messenger of the afterlife and is associated with the Moon. It escorts the gods of the underground, blacksmiths gods or gods of metals, gods of deaths and fertility.
